L’International Consensus on ANA Patterns (ICAP)

The International Consensus on Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) Patterns (ICAP) was created in 2014 by a group of experts aiming to improve the harmonization of the interpretation of the anti-cell (AC) test, a term which replaced the traditional one of ANA, by indirect immunofluorescence (IFI). The ICAP includes in its classification tree 30 different AC patterns divided into four main groups (negative, nuclear, cytoplasmic, mitotic) and two different levels of morphological recognition experience (competent and expert). In the following years, several workshops and continuous interactions with the scientific community have contributed to spreading the harmonization of IFI patterns on HEp-2 cells and to promoting the progressive improvement of the classification tree of AC patterns.
