Aims and scope
The journal La Rivista Italiana della Medicina di Laboratorio - Italian Journal of Laboratory Medicine publishes scientific papers either in Italian or in English on clinical, experimental and diagnostic technique topics related to the different disciplines of Laboratory Medicine. In particular, it promotes the appropriateness of the request for laboratory tests and the global quality in the field of Laboratory Medicine services.
Manuscript submission, conflict of interest and copyright declaration
Manuscripts should be sent in electronic format to: http://www.editorialmanager.com/rime
At the time of submission, the "Declaration of transfer of copyright to Edizioni Minerva Medica" and the "Declaration of conflict of interest" must be filled in and sent (downloadable from the links on the website http://www.editorialmanager.com/rime).
The submission of a manuscript implies that: the work has not been previously published (except in the form of abstracts or theses); is not under revision to be published elsewhere; has been approved for publication by all co-authors (see Declaration of copyright assignment to be signed by all co-authors), and, tacitly or explicitly, by the responsible authorities at the Institute where the work was done.
If the manuscript is accepted for publication, at that time the authors:
- accept that the copyright is transferred to Edizioni Minerva Medica and that the manuscript is not published elsewhere in any other language without the consent of the copyright holder.
- accept that SIPMeL transfers to the site http://www.minervamedicaonlinesubmission.it the data of the authors and the files of the manuscripts accepted in the format provided by the online submission system of the publisher. In accordance with the privacy policy, the author undertakes to give written consent to SIPMeL to make such a registration in the name and on behalf of the authors themselves. At the end of the registration the author for correspondence will receive the access data to http://www.minervamedicaonlinesubmission.it.
All articles published in this journal are the property of the publisher and their reproduction and distribution, as well as their translation and publication in electronic form are therefore prohibited. Compliance with ethical standards
The manuscripts submitted for publication must comply with the ethical standards required by the policy of Edizioni Minerva Medica available at https://www.minervamedica.it/it/riviste/ethics.php
Each manuscript must contain the following statements:
- existence of any conflict of interest
- studies on humans and animals
- informed consent of the patients involved
Declarations must be reported in three separate paragraphs inserted at the end of the text and before the references according to the following procedures:
Conflicts of interest
- in the absence of conflicts of interest:
"The authors A, B, C and D declare that they have no conflict of interest.
- in the presence of conflicts of interest:
"Author A has received funding from company ZZ; author B has received compensation for his cooperation with company XXXX; author C declares that he has no conflict of interest.
Studies on humans and animals
- If the article includes studies conducted on humans, the author should include the following statement: "All procedures described in the study and involving humans have been implemented in accordance with the ethical standards established by the Helsinki Declaration of 1964 and subsequent amendments".
- for retrospective studies (reviews, epidemiological studies, observational studies) add the following sentence:
"For this type of study, no statement on human and animal studies is required.
- for studies on animals:
"All guidelines for the care and use of animals have been applied"
- for articles that do not contain studies with humans or animals:
"The article does not contain any studies carried out on humans and animals by the authors.
Informed consent
- If the article includes studies on humans, the author should include the following statement:
"Informed consent has been obtained from all patients included in the study.
ARTICLE TYPES
The Italian Journal of Laboratory Medicine publishes the following types of articles:
Editorials on lab-diagnostic topics. Editorials are usually by invitation, but free contributions are also taken into account. The structure of these contributions must include title, abstract (structured or unstructured) and keywords.
The Monitor. Brief review on current topics in the field of laboratory diagnostics. Must include title, abstract (unstructured) and keywords. The text must not exceed 1500 words, a maximum of 20 references and two figures or tables may be included.
Reviews on lab-diagnostic topics. The structuring of these contributions should include title, abstract (structured or unstructured) and keywords.
Original articles on clinical, experimental and technical subjects. The structuring of these contributions should include Title, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, the detailed description of the Materials and Methods, the presentation of the Results accompanied by tables and figures of immediate and easy comprehension, Discussion and References.
Recommendations and guidelines. The structuring of these contributions must include title, abstract in Italian and abstract (structured or unstructured) and keywords, an abstract in Italian and an abstract in English (structured or unstructured) and keywords.
Case reports. The structuring of these contributions must include title,abstract (structured or unstructured) and keywords.
Letters. Should include title and keywords. May have a free structure of the text and do not require an abstract.
History of Medicine. The structuring of these contributions should include title, unstructured abstract and keywords. The editorial staff reserves the right, however, to publish part of the proposed texts, subject to the approval of the authors.
Book reviews. The structuring of these contributions is a free scheme (no English title, abstract or keywords are required).
All submissions will be subjected to peer-review by independent reviewers or, at the discretion of the Editors-in-Chief, to internal review by the editorial board.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Text file
For the preparation of the manuscript, please check the description for the type of article chosen.
The formats accepted are Word (.doc and .docx). The text file must contain title, authors’ details, abstract, key words, text, references, tables and titles of tables and figures. Figures should be submitted as separate files. The file should not contain active hyperlinks. Footnotes are not permitted.
Title and authors’ details
The first page of the manuscript must include: Title which should be informative and concise, not contain symbols, arbitrary formulas or abbreviations.
Authors’ details: first name in full, middle name’s initial, surname of the authors. Collective name, if any, as last author. Corresponding author marked with an asterisk. Affiliation (section, department, institution, town and country) of each author. Name, address, e-mail of the corresponding author.
In case of more than one affiliation, add a superscript numeral after each surname and before the relevant affiliation.
Running title: a shortened version of the title (no more than 40 characters) which will be placed in a header at the top of the published version. Name, address, e-mail of the corresponding author.
Abstract and key words
The second page should contain the abstract. It should briefly describe, respectively, the problem to which the study is directed, how it was conducted, the results obtained and the conclusions that the authors drew from the results. It should be structured in four paragraphs: Background, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Provide from 3 to 6 keywords (English only) using the terms of the MEDLINE/PubMed Medical Subjects Heading (MeSH). It is recommended that the English text be reviewed by a competent native speaker.
Articles in English do not need title and abstract in Italian.
The abstract does not need to be structured for the Reviews, the Monitor, the Recommendations and Guidelines, the Case Reports, the Editorials and the History of Medicine.
Scientific style
Headings: do not exceed three levels of subtitles.
Quantities and units can be expressed according to the conventional system or Système International (SI).
If possible, the nomenclature should be Insofar. Authors should use a systematic nomenclature similar to that used by the Chemical Abstract Service or IUPAC.
Abbreviations should, as far as possible, be standardized; they should be defined in full the first time they appear in the text, after which they should be used as such throughout the text. Avoid using non-standard abbreviations in the title and summary.
Commercial products and instrumentation mentioned in the text should be specified with the company name, city and country in parentheses. After the first quotation, it is sufficient to indicate in brackets only the name of the company already mentioned above.
Genes and species names must be written in italics, as must terms in Latin or English.
Prefer the use of the name of the active substance for drugs.
Supplementary digital material
The authors may submit supplementary material, i.e. datasets, tables, figures, or other information as additional files, to support and enhance their article’s text to be published in the online edition only. Authors are also requested to submit as supplementary material tables that are too long to fit on a single printed page of the journal.
Supplementary material should be uploaded as separate file(s) during submission (a file for each document, table or figure).
Each additional file should be cited in sequence within the main body of text.
If additional material is provided, please list the following information in a separate section at the end of the manuscript text: a) File name (e.g. Additional file 1); b) File format including the correct file extension. Formats accepted for text files and tables: Word (.doc and .docx) and RTF; for figures: JPEG set at 300 dpi resolution preferred; other formats accepted are TIFF and PDF (high quality).
Within the text, Supplemental material must be cited consecutively and be referred to as Supplemental material (e.g. see Supplemental Figure 1).
Supplementary material is subject to peer review as part of the manuscript. If accepted, supplementary material will be published as submitted by the author without any correction and reformatting.
Acknowledgements and funding
Acknowledgements and funding, with the indication of their motivation (technical assistance, funding, scholarships, critical review, etc.), should be reported in a short paragraph before the references.
References
The references must contain only the authors cited in the text, be numbered in Arabic numerals and consecutively as they are cited. Bibliographical entries in the text should be quoted using superscripted Arabic numerals. References must be set out in the standard format approved by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (http://www.icmje.org) (Vancouver style).
Footnotes and endnotes of Word must not be used in the preparation of references.
References (or reference quotations) in tables or in the captions of tables and figures must also be mentioned in the text; references (or reference quotations) present exclusively in tables or captions are not allowed.
Journals
Each entry must specify the author’s surname and initials (list all authors when there are six or fewer; when there are seven or more, list only the first six and then et al.), the article’s original title, the name of the Journal (according to the abbreviations used by MEDLINE/PubMed), the year of publication, the volume number and the number of the first and last pages. When citing references, please follow the rules for international standard punctuation carefully.

Tables
Tables should be submitted in the text file. Each table should be created with the Table menu of Microsoft Word table editor, by selecting the number of rows and columns needed. Tabulations are not allowed. Each table must be numbered in Roman numerals and accompanied by the relevant title. Each table must include heading, body and notes, if needed, at the foot of the table. Tables should be referenced in the text sequentially. If more than one table is quoted in the text please use the singular (Table I, II).
Figures
Each figure should be submitted as a separate file. Formats accepted: JPEG set at 300 dpi resolution preferred; other formats accepted are TIFF and PDF (high quality). Figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals and accompanied by the relevant title. If more than one figure is quoted in the text please use the singular (Figure 1, 2).Titles of figures should be repeated also in the text file. Figure should be referenced in the text sequentially.
Reproductions should be limited to the part that is essential to the paper.
Histological photographs should always be accompanied by the magnification ratio and the staining method.
If figures are in color, it should always be specified whether color or black and white reproduction is required.
After acceptance of the manuscript
Once accepted, the manuscript will be registered by SIPMeL on the website http://www.minervamedicaonlinesubmission.it, with the data of the authors. The contact author, who is primarily responsible for correspondence with the journal, will receive access data and all co-authors will receive copies of the most significant correspondence. All accepted manuscripts will be subject to editorial review. Correction of proofs should be limited to simple typographical revision. Substantial changes to the content (title and author changes, new results and value corrections, changes to figures and tables) are subject to editorial review. Changes not in keeping with the style of the journal are not accepted. Correct drafts must be returned to Minerva's online editorial team within 3 working days. In case of delay, the editorial staff of the journal may automatically correct the drafts on the basis of the original manuscript with the prior permission of the Editors in Chief.
Reprints and PDFs
Publication of manuscripts is free of charge. Colour figures, linguistic revision, and excessive alterations to proofs will be charged to the authors. Authors will receive instructions on how to order reprints and a copy of the manuscript in PDF.
