Orthodontic and surgical treatment of a skeletal class III malocclusion: a case report

Department of Dentofacial Orthopedics, Ibn Sina Hospital Center, Mohammed V University in Rabat, Rabat, Morocco

This case report describes a patient with a class III malocclusion due to a maxillary retrognathia, associated with a transverse maxillary deficit and imposed extractions of the maxillary first premolars. The patient was a male aged 26 years old, whose the chief complaint was related to the lower teeth positioned in front of the upper incisors. The patient is diagnosed to have a hyperdivergent skeletal Class III with an anterior crossbite and bilateral arch narrowing. Case management required the use of a combined orthodontic and surgical approach to achieve sagittal correction and to improve facial aesthetic of the patient. This case demonstrates that an atypical extraction model can be used in class III orthosurgical cases and that a therapeutic class II with occlusal adjustments can also be stable.
