From anatomy to function of large vein

Veins are defined as a transportation conduit to carry back the blood toward the heart from tissue, starting from the venules in peripheral tissues and organs to converge to create various sizes of small and then larger veins. Primary function of venous system is to deliver deoxygenated blood from the tissue to the right atrium of the heart for systemic circulation. Throughout the last century, advanced di agnostic technology led by Duplex ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computerized tomography has provided enormous amount of new information on the venous system including its neglected relationship with the lymphatic system. Now, a new concept on the venous system is established as one of dual drainage system together with the lymphatic system with a new prospect.
