Directional atherectomy and adjunctive drug-coated balloon angioplasty

The safety and efficiency of directed atherectomy (DA) have consistently been demonstrated in multiple clinical trails. The mechanical excision of the intima, however, seems to induce a reasonable inflammatory response which limit the long term clinical benefit. To control this inflammatory process it has been proposed to apply antiproliferative drugs, via a paclitaxel coated balloon (DCB). The combination of DA and consecutively DCB has the potential to provide optimal vessel preparation and to improve drug uptake during balloon angioplasty.
