Endovascular treatment of vertebral arteriovenous fistulas and pseudoaneurysms: a single-center experience
Zhu Y., Ma L.
Department of Neurosurgery, Wuhan General Hospital, Guangzhou command of PLA, Wuhan, China
AIM: There are limited reports regarding the treatment of vertebral arteriovenous fistulas (VAVFs) and pseudoaneurysms. Our aim was to describe the clinical and angiographic results of traumatic injuries of the vertebral artery and the treatment strategies used to treat them.
METHODS: The clinical records and imaging studies of vertebral artery injuries in our institution between 2000 and 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. Endovascular treatment was performed in twelve patients using various techniques (balloon occlusion, coil embolization).
RESULTS: Immediate total occlusion of the lesions was achieved in eleven patients by endovascular therapy. Clinical improvement was documented for all patients. There were no clinically symptomatic complications.
CONCLUSION: In this small series, endovascular techniques comprised a safe, effective method for treating VAVFs. Their use was not associated with significant morbidity or mortality.
