Treatment of acute traumatic thoracic aortic lesions

Schoder M.

Department of Angiography and Interventional Radiology Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria

PDF

Acute traumatic aortic rupture is a highly lethal event. In victims who reach the hospital alive, immediate treatment is warranted in a substantial number of patients. Most cases present with serious associated injuries that are likely to increase the risk of surgical complications and death. Delayed surgical repair until resuscitation is advocated in patients who suffer from stable thoracic aortic injuries. Alternatively to conventional surgery, endovascular repair has been shown to be feasible with promising technical results and mortality and paraplegia rates, comparing favorable to surgical results.
