Aorto-caval fistula and neoplastic caval thrombosis due to local recurrence of renal cell carcinoma

Aorto-­caval fis­tu­la is a ­rare com­pli­ca­tion of neo­plasms involv­ing the ret­ro­per­i­ton­eum and the infe­ri­or ­vena ­cava. This occur­rence ­needs care­ful sur­gi­cal plan­ning to ­repair the fis­tu­la, ­treat malig­nant ­caval throm­bo­sis and ­resect the neo­plasm. The man­age­ment of a neo­plas­tic ­patient in ­poor clin­i­cal con­di­tion ­must con­sid­er the ­need to pal­li­ate symp­toms and pro­long sur­vi­val.
