Spleen injuries and their therapeutic approach: when and how to take advantage of interventional radiologists

Spleen injuries are among the most frequent trauma-related injuries and are classified according to the American Association for the Surgery of the Spleen Trauma Classification (AAST-OIS). Treatment of patients with spleen injuries has changed in the last few decades, especially in favor of non-operative management (NOM), that ranges from observation and monitoring to angiography/angioembolization in patients hemodynamically stable. Various strategy of embolizations exists and different curative approach can be adopted. In this paper we review the selection criteria for splenic artery embolization and the different strategies of treatment.
