Acute lung failure due to COVID-19 in a patient with sickle cell anemia

Michele FRONZA, Floriana BARDARO, Emanuele STIRPE

Department of Respiratory Diseases, Bolzano Hospital, Bolzano, Italy

Sickle cell disease is a common hereditary genetic disorder, that can lead to chronic anemia and hemolysis, following several viral and bacterial infections. Data on this patient associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection are scarce, but it was reported that sickle cell disease could be protective in this patient population from fatal COVID-19 disease. Our case supports the hypothesis that sickle cell disease is protective towards severe COVID-19.
