Inhalation toxicity with N, N′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride and changes in spirometry indices

BACKGROUND: Deaths from poisoning with paraquat are due to its different effects on various organs, including the respiratory system. It was considered the mortality due to poisoning with paraquat and the effects of this poison to various systems, including the respiratory system and the highly stimulating local and systemic effects of this poison, by investigating the determination of pulmonary capacity in patients survived from paraquat poisoning between years 2011-2016 in Razi Hospital in Ahvaz, in the event of a change in the pulmonary capacity of patients, a new therapeutic and diagnostic approach to prevent lung problems in surviving patients is caused by paraquat poisoning.
METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study was carried out on 24 surviving patients from paraquat poisoning in 2011-2016 in Razi Hospital of Ahvaz. The information of the patients, including the age and gender, the amount of poison used, and the effects on various organs extracted from records of the patients. To assess the pulmonary function, patients underwent spirometry test (including FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF) without bronchodilator and then the results were evaluated using SPSS software version 24.
RESULTS: Using a randomized method, 24 people survived from paraquat poisoning were enrolled in the study, which included 12 women and 12 men. The mean age of the women was 23.2 years and the mean age of the men was 25.2 years. Spirometry test without bronchodilator was performed for all patients. Ten cases of patients including four women and six men had abnormal spirometry with obstructive changes and 14 cases of normal spirometry.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with paraquat poisoning in the years 2011 to 2016, there was a significant relationship between paraquat poisoning with pulmonary capacity and patient’s pulmonary function in Razi Hospital of Ahvaz. 41.6% of the patients had obstructive changes due to the high rate of pulmonary involvement between paraquat poisoning and pulmonary function and pulmonary function of patients.
