Evaluation of pulmonary nodules in 2015

Rai H., Choi H., Mazzone P.

Respiratory Institute, Cleveland Clinic, OH, USA

PDF

Pulmonary nodules are commonly identified on imaging of the chest. The goal of pulmonary nodule evaluation is to minimize testing performed for benign nodules while expediting the treatment of malignant nodules. The approach to evaluating a lung nodule is informed by clinical and imaging features known to impact the probability that the nodule is malignant, and by an understanding of the accuracy and potential harms of available diagnostic testing. The final evaluation algorithm is influenced by the patient’s values and comorbidities. Future advances in imaging, molecular biomarkers, guideline implementation, and communication strategies will help the clinician to more effectively meet our stated goal.
