Transient osteoporosis of the hip in pregnancy

Massimiliano ROCCHIETTI MARCH

Emergency Department, Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, Sant’Andrea Hospital, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy

Transient osteoporosis of the hip is a rare syndrome which affects women during the last trimester of pregnancy, and middle-aged men. Hips are primarily involved by joint pain, while the polyarticular involvement is very rare. Etiology is unknown even if several hypotheses have been made. Several kinds of treatments have been proposed but none of these alone are always effective. The clinical course is benign, and the condition usually resolves within weeks after delivery, even if rare complications (i.e., fractures) and avascular necrosis may occur.
