Primary malignant bone tumors are rare but are one of the most common malignancies in adolescents. The optimum management of a child with a bone tumor is at a specialist treatment center by a multi-disciplinary team experienced in the diagnosis, chemotherapy and surgical management of these conditions. Improved methods of sarcoma diagnosis, staging, and neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy have made limb salvage a viable option for most patients without compromising long-term survival or rates of disease recurrence compared to amputation. This article aims to review the indications, techniques, limitations and complications of the numerous methods of bone tumor resections and reconstructions in the context of limb salvage surgery.
