INTRODUCTION: Large bone defects are commonly caused by severe traumas, pseudoarthrosis and tumors. Managing large bone defects remains a challenging problem, requiring complex and multidisciplinary treatment.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched terms on PubMed, Google Scholar and the Cochrane library from inception until December 2020. The search strategy was a combination of medical, subjective and methodological keywords.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Several techniques have been described for the management of bone defects: intramedullary nailing, transosseus compression distraction osteosynthesis, Masquelet technique, bone grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Post-traumatic bone defects are one of the most challenging orthopedic conditions to treat. The decision to proceed with reconstruction and the techniques to use should be evaluated on an individual basis, with treatment tailored according to patient and fracture characteristics.
KEY WORDS: Reconstructive surgical procedures; Ilizarov technique; Bone transplantation
