Treatment of longitudinal fractures of patella by percutaneous cannulated screws with tension band wiring technique

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper was to explore the curative effects of close reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws with tension band wiring technique in the treatment of longitudinal fractures of patella.
METHODS: From March 2012 to April 2016, 8 patients (5 women and 3 men) with simple longitudinal patella fractures were treated by close reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws with tension band wiring technique and then all were followed-up, observed and evaluated with radiographs, VAS Score, ROM and Bostman Score, respectively.
RESULTS: Eight followed-up patients were all satisfied in fracture healing. Radiographic evidence of solid union of the fracture was observed in all cases in a mean period of 10.9 weeks (range 6-56 weeks). The VAS score was 3.1±1.1 at 4 weeks and 1.6±0.8 when radiographic fracture healing was achieved. No defect of the articular surface, patellofemoral arthritic changes, breaking or backing out of internal fixator, or steel wire rupture was detected through radiological examinations. Full range of active extension and flexion was achieved, and the average Bostman Score was 29.4/30 (range 28-30) at one year after surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of longitudinal patella fractures with close reduction and Percutaneous cannulated screws with tension band wiring is characterized by simple manipulation,minimal damage,reliable fixation,early rehabilitation and good functional results.
