Atypical femoral fractures have unique radiologic and clinical features that can be associated with severely suppressed bone turnover. For complete atypical femoral fractures, surgical fixation is required, and interlocking intramedullary nailing is the preferred fixation method. The authors report four cases of proximal femoral insufficiency fracture after conventional interlocking IM nailing for atypical femoral shaft fractures.
