BACKGROUND: In recent times, among young generation the need to form an athletic and well-built body is growing. The most simple and affordable way to improve health and strength and to create and maintain athletic body is to practice artistic gymnastics. Therefore, different kinds of artistic gymnastics such as bodybuilding, powerlifting, and recently appeared workout are becoming more and more popular. The aim of our study is to conduct the comparative analysis of the physical fitness of students practicing workout and powerlifting and to assess the results of anthropometric measurements.
METHODS: The study involved 20 athletes practicing workout (W) and 20 powerlifters (P) aged 18-22 years with a different sport qualification. We used anthropometric measurements and the body composition test performed with the help of Tanita diagnostic analyzer.
RESULTS: The data obtained demonstrated that almost all parameters of the body composition were higher in powerlifters than in athletes practicing workout. At the same time, in terms of some parameters powerlifters showed low physical fitness, for example, the average body mass index was equal 25.235±0.67 (kg/m2), which is considered as excess body mass (pre-obesity), while in athletes practicing workout this parameter was 22.57±0.39 (kg/m2), which is regarded as the normal value. The study showed that the fat tissue percentage and fat tissue mass (kg) of the trunk and limbs were higher in powerlifters. However, powerlifters were characterized by higher parameters of muscle tissue mass, basal metabolism, and total body water.
CONCLUSIONS: The anthropometric analysis revealed that powerlifters are characterized by more developed chest, stronger physique, higher value of biceps excursion, more developed legs and shoulders. At the same time, athletes practicing workout have more developed ideal body structure in comparison with powerlifters.
