BACKGROUND: This study analyzed the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle of women with unilateral idiopathic chronic dacryocystitis who were treated with endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.
METHODS: Thirteen women participated (mean age, 57.3±8.7 years); the eyes were classified as those with idiopathic chronic dacryocystitis (group 1) and unaffected eyes (group 2), forming two groups of 13 eyes each. The Trigno Delsys electromyograph was used to measure the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle under clinical conditions. Open eyes, closed eyes with and without isometric contraction, the actions of blinking with and without isometric contraction, and eyebrow raising were tested for 5 s each. The electromyographic data normalized for maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the eye were tabulated and analyzed (SPSS; t-test; P<0.05).
RESULTS: A significant difference was observed in the clinical condition of eyebrows raising (P=0.02) between the groups. Group 1 had lower normalized electromyographic activity for all clinical conditions evaluated.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the function of the orbicularis oculi muscle on the side affected by chronic idiopathic dacryocystitis was altered compared to the contralateral musculature. Additional studies are necessary to confirm our findings and the hypotheses of muscular hypofunction.
