The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of external parameters on the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by a bacterial consortium. The bacterial consortium, isolated by enrichment from the rhizosphere of Phragmites australis, was capable of utilising 4-NP as the sole carbon, and energy source. Degradation was studied under different conditions using resting cells. Among those, the influence of ascorbic acid and of plant extract obtained from P. australis was studied. Biodegradation of 4-NP was enhanced in the presence of these components. This work is part of a wider study on the use of phyto-microbial complexes to attenuate soil and water pollution.
