Cell sorting using flow cytometry. Old instruments for new applications

The use of ­flow cytom­etry and ­cell ­sorting ­started in ­research and clin­ical inves­ti­ga­tion labor­a­to­ries in 1980. At ­present, ­cell ­sorting has a ­number of ­classic indi­ca­tions, in par­tic­ular in the ­field of immu­nology and hem­a­tology. In addi­tion, new appli­ca­tions, in the ­field of bio­tech­nology (­such as pur­ifi­ca­tion of ­extremely ­rare pop­u­la­tions as ­well as ­multi-par­a­metric sep­ar­a­tion on the ­basis of ­both phys­ical and phe­no­typic param­e­ters) ­have ­been devel­oped ­recently. The tech­nical ­approach for ­these new ­sorting strat­e­gies is cru­cial in ­order to ­obtain reli­able and repro­du­cible ­results.
