OCT angiography in retinal vein occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a common vascular disorder of the retina and one of the most common causes of vision loss worldwide. Specifically, it is the second most common cause of blindness from retinal vascular disease after diabetic retinopathy. Fluorescein angiography and fundus imaging have always been keystones in the management and treatment of RVO, as they are effective in monitoring typical vascular changes, such as hemorrhages, macular edema, exudates, ischemic changes and new vessels. The introduction of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has allowed to redefine the approach to RVO, providing much more information on the quantitative and qualitative features of macular edema. Recently, a new technique, i.e. OCT angiography (OCTA), has allowed to detect chorioretinal vessels without dye injection, thus opening a new era in the management of retinal vascular diseases. The OCTA in RVO can detect minimum alterations related to occlusive vascular pathologies, allowing a detailed diagnosis and a careful follow-up.
