Use of hybrid MMF in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a retrospective review

AIM: The investigators hypothesized that Stryker’s SMARTlock Hybrid MMF™ system would provide adequate fixation in a time efficient, safe, and economically feasible fashion.
METHODS: Using a retrospective chart review, the authors reviewed 10 patients treated by the principle investigator in whom the system was utilized. Data was recorded including demographics, time of application, intraoperative complications, length of application, post-operative complications, anesthetic method used for removal, outcome, and cost. Means and standard deviation were calculated. This data was compared and contrasted to currently used methods of maxillomandibular fixation through a literature review.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed a 21.4 ± 6.38 minute average application time, no needle stick injuries, radiographic root perforation in 2.5% of screws, screw loosening in 0.8% of screws, and mandibular gingival hyperplasia in 6 of the ten patients. All hardware was removed without the use of general anesthesia. The cost analysis revealed the hybrid MMF system to be the most expensive at $3,170.00 per case, $686.00 more than the second most expensive option which was Erich arch bars.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the SMARTlock Hybrid MMF™ system provides an adequate fixation option for short and long term application of maxillomandibular fixation in an efficient, safe, and economically feasible manner when compared to currently used techniques.
