Bilateral condylar intrusion into the middle cranial fossa: case report and review of the literature

Intrusion of the mandibular condylar head into the middle cranial fossa is an uncommon event in maxillofacial trauma. This case report and literature review found 53 cases of condylar intrusion into the middle cranial fossa. To our knowledge no cases of bilateral condylar intrusion without concurrent fracture of the mandible have been reported. We report a unique case of bilateral condylar intrusion in a 13-year-old female including her postoperative course. Unique to this case is the fact that both condyles penetrated the glenoid fossa without any concurrent mandible fracture. The patient was restored to her proper form and function with no resultant deficit.
