BACKGROUND: Oncocytoma of salivary origin is a rare benign tumor, composed of epithelial cells containing granular cytoplasm.
METHODS: The study presents a clinicopathological analysis of oncocytoma and to discuss its histopathological differential diagnosis.
RESULTS: All tumors occurred in elderly patients in the 6th or 7th decade of life with a slight female predilection (67%). Approximately 86% occurred in major salivary glands. Histopathologically 57% of tumors presented as a single nodule while the remaining tumors exhibited a multinodular appearance. All oncocytomas showed dark-blue cytoplasmic granules, with phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin staining (PTAH) which was used to confirm the diagnosis. None of the patients who were treated with surgical excision developed recurrences.
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary tumor occurring predominantly in elderly patients. Although, histopathological diagnosis is reliable, awareness of its differential diagnosis is important to avoid misdiagnosis and overtreatment.
