BACKGROUND: The study identified current resistance training practices in ultramarathon runners participating in Eastern States 100 and determined the relationship between training practices and pace.
METHODS: 44 registered runners completed a resistance training history survey and time of arrival was collected at each aid station. Of the 24 finishers, 11 participants were resistance trained, and 13 participants were not resistance trained. Of the 20 non-finishers, 13 participants were resistance trained, and 7 participants were not resistance trained.
RESULTS: A T-Test demonstrated that within the group of 21 finishers who had completed the survey, there was no significant difference (P=0.191) in overall pace or in the last five splits between resistance trained and untrained participants.
CONCLUSIONS: This investigation offers insight to resistance training practices of ultramarathon runners and illustrates no significant difference in ultramarathon performance between those who resistance train and those who do not.
