Physical performance and self-rated ability in collegiate athletes with chronic lateral ankle sprains

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of physical readiness and self-rated functional ability are recommended to support a decision to return to play following a sports injury. However, there has been little research on the impact of lateral ankle sprains (LAS) on these evaluations. This study compared the functional abilities of collegiate athletes with and without a history of LAS by determining their balance performance, dorsiflexion range of motion, leg strength and agility and analyzing their responses to self-rated questionnaires.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 58 male collegiate athletes (aged 18-30 years) including individuals with chronic LAS (LAS group, N.=29) and asymptomatic individuals (control group, N.=29). Tenderness during ankle ligament palpation and joint laxity were determined. The participants completed the foot and ankle ability measure (FAAM) and the Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT) and performed the modified star excursion balance test (the modified SEBT), the dorsiflexion weight-bearing lunge test (DWBLT), the jump-and-reach test (JRT) and the agility t-test.
RESULTS: Approximately 50% of the LAS participants had joint laxity. For the injured limb, participants in the LAS group had higher pain scores due to tenderness during lateral ankle ligament palpation (P=0.01) and lower CAIT scores (P=0.01) compared to those in the control group. However, the functional test results and the FAAM scores did not significantly differ between the groups (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Although the athletes with chronic LAS experienced tenderness during ligament palpation and feelings of instability, their functional abilities and self-rated FAAM scores did not differ from those of asymptomatic athletes.
