Effects of aerobic dance with electrical stimulant on body composition and radiological circumference of obese elderly women

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the electrical stimulant as a muscle contractile supplement on skeletal muscle to improve the body composition including radiological circumference of elderly obesity.
METHODS: Thirty women were randomized into electromyostimulation (EMS) group (EMSG; N.=15) and control group (CON; N.=15). Both groups were played aerobic dancing while wearing an EMS suit for 40 min a day. The sessions were performed 3 days a week for 12 weeks. Body composition was measured using a bioelectric impedance analyzer and the circumferences of the abdomen and thighs were measured using computer tomography on weeks 0 and 12.
RESULTS: A significant effect of the EMS intervention was the decreased percentage of fat, whereas increased skeletal muscle mass and basal metabolic rate were evident. Specifically, the abdominal subcutaneous fat (Sf, P=0.026) and total fat (Tf, P=0.037) between groups showed significant differences at week 12. There were also significant differences in the Sf (P=0.019) and Tf (P=0.023) of thighs between groups at week 12.
CONCLUSIONS: The effect of using EMS on body composition, including the circumferences of the abdomen and thighs, was found to be improvable. Supplementing aerobic dance with an electrical stimulant offers clinical benefits for obese elderly women.
