BACKGROUND: Limited physical activities in the elderly can cause decreasing cardiorespiratory fitness and biomolecular changes including increased Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α). Indonesian Heart-friendly Exercise Series-I (IHES-I) is one of the aerobic sports that can improve cardiorespiratory fitness. This study aimed to analyze the effect of IHES-I on cardiorespiratory fitness and TNF-α plasma protein expression in the elderly.
METHODS: This study used three arms experimental study with pre and post-test design that included 27 healthy older people who routinely carried out IHES-I at a Nursing Home in Indonesia. The research subjects were divided into three groups based on their exercise frequency, namely three, four, and five times a week for six weeks. The cardiorespiratory fitness was measured through the distance traveled on the 6-minute test at the first and sixth weeks. The TNF-α plasma was examined based on the ELISA method. Data were analyzed by using paired t-test so that the mean difference value would be discovered before and after exercising.
RESULTS: The elderly group who carried out IHES-I three times a week can significantly improve cardiorespiratory fitness (269.5±102.5 m vs. 375.5±79.98 m) and mean difference was -106,0; P=0.009, P<0.05. There were mean differences of TNF-α plasma protein expression between before and after exercising (423.75±66.0 pg/mL vs. 379.93±100.23 pg/mL) and mean difference was -1.70; P=0.954, P<0.05.
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that IHES-I three times a week improves better cardiorespiratory fitness and can not decrease TNF-α plasma protein expression in elderly.
