Evaluation of pacing strategies of elite men during CrossFit competition

BACKGROUND: The main purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the pacing strategies used by Greek elite men at the 2015 CrossFit National Championship. Our specific objectives were to discover the optimal pacing strategy of CrossFit men and if the strategies they used would be affected by: 1) the number of the exercises carried out in the competition; 2) the technique used to perform the exercises effectively; and 3) the type of the exercises.
METHODS: By using the expert software application SportScout, 56 athletes were observed and their pacing strategies were recorded. For the statistical processing of the data, the non-parametric Crosstabs and Chi-square (χ2) test of independence were conducted.
RESULTS: According to the results, the most widely used strategy during the competition was the positive pacing (56%). The second most used strategy was the even pacing (29%), followed by a variable pacing (15%). The pacing profiles of the athletes were dependent on the number of the exercises executed, the type of the exercises performed, and the technique used to perform the exercises (all P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this research indicate that the CrossFit athletes under study used different pacing strategies in their attempt to manage their energy resources effectively and thus achieve the best possible performance in the competition. Despite their attempt, however, the most widely used pacing strategy was the positive pacing, which negatively affected their performance possibly due to the premature depletion of their energy resources. On the contrary, the optimal pacing strategy was the even pacing, as athletes who employed this strategy managed to maintain a stable pace in exercise intensity during competition, which resulted in the best performance outcomes possibly with the lowest levels of energy consumption.
