Neuromuscular electrical stimulation with blood flow restriction increases serum growth hormone concentration

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate whether low-intensity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) when combined with blood flow restriction (BFR) could induce growth hormone (GH) secretion.
METHODS: Eight healthy males (mean±SE; age, 26±1 years; height, 174.3±1.7 cm; body mass: 69.3±2.7 kg) were subjected to three experimental conditions in random order and separated by more than one week: BFR alone (BFR), NMES alone (NMES) and NMES combined with BFR (NMES-BFR). During NMES and NMES-BFR, 23 min of low-intensity NMES at 5-10% of the maximal voluntary contraction was applied to both quadriceps. During BFR and NMES-BFR, four sets of BFR (5 min each) on the most proximal portion of both legs were completed with 1-min rest intervals between the sets. Lactate concentrations were measured before and at 0, 10, and 40 min after the exercise session. Serum GH and plasma noradrenalin concentrations were measured before and at 10 and 40 min after the exercise session.
RESULTS: During NMES-BFR only, the blood lactate concentration increased (P<0.05) from pre- to 0 min post-exercise and gradually returned to baseline levels, and GH significantly increased (P<0.05) from pre- to 10 min post-exercise and returned to baseline levels after 40 min post-exercise. Noradrenalin concentration significantly increased (P<0.05) from pre- to 0 min post-exercise and returned to baseline levels after 40 min post-exercise in all conditions.
CONCLUSIONS: The addition of BFR to very low-intensity (5~10% MVC) NMES augments the secretion of GH only when BFR.
