BACKGROUND: In this study we evaluated the effect of the treatment with medicines such as beta blockers (C07A), ACE inhibitors (C09A - agents acting on the renin-angiotensin system) and paracetamol (N02BE) on the bone health in the late adult population (40- to 65-year-olds) from a developing country.
METHODS: 162 subjects (53 males and 109 females) participated in this retrospective study. Bone Mineral Density (BMD), T-score and Z-score at distal forearm regions of both arms subjects (measured by DXA scan), together with the Handgrip Isometric Strength (HIS) (by handgrip) were measured. Additionally, General Healthcare Status Questionnaire, Brief Medication Questionnaire 1 (BMQ), together with self-administrated International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Nutritional Standard Questionnaire (NSQ) were filled.
RESULTS: Significant differences (P<0.05) were found in BMD, T-score between consumers and non-consumers of N02BE drugs and C09A, whereas not-significant results (P>0.05) were found in all variables between consumers and non-consumers of C07A drugs.
CONCLUSIONS: Since hypertension and osteoporosis are common diseases of our study subject’s age, clinicians should be aware of the possible side effects of hypertension treatment in bone loss. Non-significant effect of beta blockers indicates that these medicines should be the choice when treating people with hypertension and risk of osteoporosis. Considering this study results, patients that are in combination therapy should be advised to be careful with the use of paracetamol, regardless it is generally safe profile.
