Idiopathic granulomatous gastritis: an entity clinically mimicking tumor

Department of Pathology, Mengucekgazi Education and Research Hospital, Erzincan University, Erzincan, Turkey
Idiopathic granulomatous gastritis is a rare disease. Its diagnosis must be made after excluding other causes of granulomatous disease like Crohn’s disease, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, mycosis, syphilis, foreign body reaction and other reasons. Although it is associated with Helicobacter pylori, it might see rarely without Helicobacter pylori. It sometimes might be confused with malignancy clinically. The definitive diagnosis is made only by histopathological examination. In our case, a 49-year-old Caucasian woman admitted to hospital with epigastric pain complaint. In esophagastroduodenoscopy, there was antral hyperemia and a 13-mm hypoechoic mass lesion in submucosal layer. A biopsy was taken with prediagnosis of malignancy. Histopathologic examination determined a non-caseating gastric granulomatous inflammation. There was no histopathological finding of malignancy and any specific granulomatous diseases. This case was reported as idiopathic granulomatous gastritis.
