Running mechanics in recreational runners, soccer and tennis players

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was find whether there is difference in some biomechanical variables between recreational runners, soccer and tennis players.
METHODS: Stride frequency, vertical oscillation and ground contact time were compared on treadmill in active runners (N.=24); competitive soccer (N.=19) and tennis players (N.=11).
RESULTS: Runners had significantly higher stride frequency than tennis players at velocity 15 and 18 km.h-1 (2.9±0.18 vs. 2.77±0.10 Hz; P<0.05, ES=0.79; 2.98±0.19 vs. 2.85±0.13 Hz; P<0.05; ES=0.72) and lower vertical oscillation (10.0±1.69 vs. 11.49±1.22 cm, P<0.05, ES=0.94; 9.38±1.67 vs. 11.13±1.60, P<0.01, ES=1.06). There were no significant differences in stride frequency between runners and soccer players. However higher body height in tennis players were no significant related to any running mechanics, positive correlation was found between stride frequency and vertical oscillation.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that there may be some biomechanical variables differed between recreationally trained runners and tennis players. In tennis vertical oscillation and running frequency may not be unique biomechanical factors of performance than in distance running.
