Description of physiological aging process and detection of malnutrition through the study of body composition determined by bioimpedance

BACKGROUNDː Aging causes changes in body composition that have the effect of increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality. Multifrequency bioimpedance analysis is a simple, reproducible and non-invasive technique that measures body composition parameters. The aim of this study is to focus on the evolution of the tissue, metabolic and hydrics indicators induced by physiological aging, and to verify the relevance of bioimpedance as a tool for detecting malnutrition among older people.
METHODSː A sample of 80 healthy old subjects was analyzed using a clinically validated multifrequency impedancemeter. Tissue, metabolic and hydrics indices were calculated.
RESULTSː The results showed a decrease of Fat Free Mass, Total Body Water and Fat Free Mass Hydration rates as well as an increase of average Fat Mass induced by physiological aging.
CONCLUSIONSː We can suppose on the appropriateness of this tool to evaluate the criteria of malnutrition in older people and to highlight potential pathological aging.
