Effects of short-term training camp including aerobic exercise and vegetarian diet on body composition, physical fitness and blood biochemical parameters in collegians

BACKGORUND: This study examined the effects of short-term aerobic exercise and vegetarian diet on physical fitness, body composition, lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism in collegians.
METHODS: 65 collegians (male 44, female 21) participated in this study. During 10 days of the study, all participants lived in a domitory with two hour’s daily and took the same vegetarian menu. Body composition (weight, BMI, body fat mass), physical fitness (back strength, shoulder flexibility, sit-and-reach, VO2max), and lipid and glucose metabolism (TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, HbA1c) parameters were measured.
RESULTS: The results showed that there were significant improvements in physical fitness (back strength, shoulder flexibility, sit-and-reach), body composition (weight, BMI, body fat mass), and lipid and glucose metabolism (TG, TC, LDL-C, glucose, insulin). Further gender subgroup analysis, showed that physical fitness (back strength, right shoulder flexibility, sit-and-reach, VO2max) significantly increased in males but body composition (weight, BMI, body fat mass) and lipid and glucose metabolism (TG, TC, LDL-C, glucose, insulin) parameters significantly decreased in both males and femals. However, BMI decreased more significantly in the female group than that of the male group, while sit-and-reach test results increased more significantly in the male group than that of the female group.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the ten day aerobic exercise and vegetarian diet program is effective for improving physical fitness and lipid and glucose metabolism.
