BACKGROUND: There are controversial data regarding whether coronary sinus dimension determined by echocardiography in patients with atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) is different than in normal population. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether coronary sinus dimension determined by echocardiography is different in patients with AVNRT than in normal population.
METHODS: A total of 86 patients diagnosed with AVNRT using electrophysiological study were compared to 64 healthy control subjects. Age, gender, Body Mass Index, and body surface area were recorded. Coronary sinus index calculated by dividing echocardiographic osteal, mid and distal coronary sinus diameters to body surface area was compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: Age, gender, BMI, and BSA were comparable between patients diagnosed with AVNRT and the control group (P>0.05). Osteal (12±2.6 vs. 11.3±2.3, P=0.102), mid (9.6±2 vs. 9.6±2, P=0.503) and distal coronary sinus diameters (8.3±1.5 vs. 8.1±1.5) and osteal (0.66±0.15 vs. 0.62±0.13, P=0.126), mid (0.62±0.13 vs. 9.4±1.7, P=0.503), and distal (0.45±0.9 vs. 0.44±0.9, P=0.481) coronary sinus indexes were similar to normal population.
CONCLUSIONS: Coronary sinus index determined by echocardiography in patients with AVNRT was not different than in normal population.
