AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) gene and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters in male Korean non-vegetarian and vegetarian groups.
METHODS: Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), sound of speed (SOS) and stiffness index of calcaneus were measured using an ultrasound bone densitometer, and the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-AR gene genotyped by PCR-BstOI RFLP method.
RESULTS: There were significant differences in the genotype and allele distributions of the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-AR gene among controls, osteopenia and osteoporosis groups (P<0.05). In addition, this genetic polymorphism was significantly associated with BUA and BUA T-score values in our vegetarian group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: In summary, the data from this study suggest that the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-AR gene may be one of the useful genetic markers for male osteoporosis measured by QUS of the calcaneus in especially vegetarian group.
