BACKGROUND: Liquid intake after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is important for adequate weight loss and the patient’s lifestyle. Currently, no standardized questionnaires exist for assessment of liquid tolerance (LT) after LSG. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term LT after LSG using a LT questionnaire.
METHODS: Assessment of quality of liquid intake occurred at 1st, 6th, 12th, and 24th postoperative months using a LT questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire aimed to evaluate the overall subjective satisfaction with liquid intake. The second part assessed the tolerance for still water, tea, milk, sodas, and juices.
RESULTS: Improvements in overall liquid tolerance were statistically significant between 1st and 6th (P<0.001) and between 6th and 12th months (P<0.001). Still water was the worst tolerated liquid in the first six months. A significant improvement in tolerance to still water was observed at 6th as compared to 1st postoperative month (P<0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term LT after LSG is good. Still water is the worst tolerated liquid, particularly in the first postoperative months. Due to the importance of adequate liquid intake after LSG, future research should concentrate on improving LT, especially water, during the first few months after the surgery.
