Spontaneous hemothorax revealing an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration

Tania MARX , Antoine SIGAUX, Thibaut DESMETTRE

Department of Emergency, University Hospital of Besançon, Besançon, France

Bonchopulmonary sequestrations are a rare congenital malformation and have been divided into intralobar or extralobar. Bonchopulmonary sequestrations may be asymptomatic and not discovered until complications, mainly recurrent attacks of pneumonia. We report a case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration with an initial presentation mimicking a pleuro-pneumonia, and revealed by a spontaneous hemothorax responsible of acute respiratory failure and hemorrhagic shock. Spontaneous hemothorax is a rare complication of bronchopulmonary sequestration, but can be rapidly life-threatening. Clinicians should not misdiagnosed this disease, which treatment must be rapidly realized by endovascular embolization or lobectomy via thoracotomy.
