Cardiac autotransplantation for resection of a left atrial sarcoma

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Vienna General Hospital, Vienna, Austria
Malignant cardiac tumors are uncommon and generally associated with a poor prognosis. Herein we describe an unusual case of cardiac myxofibrosarcoma involving primary surgical resection with adjuvant chemotherapeutic treatment, which resulted in tumor recurrence. At this time the extension of the tumor was large, so that we could only resect it ex-vivo through cardiac autotranplantation. We found that the tumor already infiltrated the left upper pulmonary vein and therefore an R0 resection was not possible. The patient survived the procedure uneventful. Despite the incompleteness of the resection, the patient is still alive 38 months after the first tumor resection.
