BACKGROUND: Refractive errors are among common and modifiable disorders in the global population. Like many other medical practices, the patient may have anxiety and fear before and during this surgery. As like LASIK surgery, it is considered among the most effective ways to correct eye refractive errors and causes significant anxiety to patients similar to other invasive medical interventions. Since the effect of music therapy has been investigated on anxiety level of other medical interventions and no study has ever been conducted in this field, the purpose of present study was to investigate the effect of music therapy on anxiety level of patients undergoing LASIK eye surgery before operation.
METHODS: Present study has been conducted in the form of a double-blind clinical trial experiment on 62 patients undergoing LASIK eye surgery in Apadana hospital of Ahvaz. To carry out investigations, the patients were randomly divided in two 31-member groups including control group and intervention group and their anxiety level was measured using the scale of Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) at an hour before surgery and at the entrance to the operating room.
RESULTS: The gender ratio of intervention group included 14 male patients and 17 female patients, while the ratio for control group included 18 male patients and 13 female patients and there was no significant difference two groups (P=1.00). No statistical difference was reported in investigating demographic factors of intervention and control groups (Table of demographic information). The investigations were carried out on different age ranges in two groups (P=0/3/2) of education level (P=0.667) (P=0.336). In intervention group, the level of state anxiety (48.16) was reduced at entrance to surgery room up to 36.39 after music- therapy intervening which was statistically significant (P<0.001). In control group, the value of this measurement was 44.66 before intervening and reduced to 43.19 after intervening and hence, there was no significant difference (P=0.1111).In investigating the trait risks in intervention group, the level of trait anxiety was 41.39 before intervening and reduced to 40.61 which the difference was not significant (P=0.933). Also in control group, the value of this measurement was 37.16 before intervening and 37.71after intervening which the difference was not significant (P=0.225).The finding of present study indicated the significant effect of music-therapy intervening on state anxiety level of patients before surgery of an eye in intervention group and the effect of music-therapy intervening on trait anxiety level of patients in intervention group was not reported significant (P=014) which means the intervention did not affect the level of patients’ trait anxiety in the group.
CONCLUSIONS: Utilizing from music therapy can significantly reduce state anxiety level of patients undergoing LASIK eye surgery before operation.
