BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to measure the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) insertion sites dimensions both on the femur and on the tibia during arthroscopy in patients undergoing ACL reconstruction and to search for correlations between the insertion site lengths and the patient’s physical characteristics.
METHODS: We included patients with ACL tears scheduled for arthroscopic reconstruction. For every case we documented the patient’s age, sex, weight, height and calculated the body mass index (BMI). A total of 94 patients were included, 74 men and 20 females with a median age of 28 years (24;34) (ranging 18-48 years). During arthroscopy the tibial and femoral footprints of the ACL were identified and measured in length with an arthroscopic ruler.
RESULTS: The median length of the femoral ACL insertion site was 15 mm (14 mm; 16 mm), and the median length of the tibial insertion site was 16 mm (15mm; 18 mm). The femoral insertion site length, in men, was between 12 and 20 mm, and in women between 12 and 16 mm. The tibial insertion site length was between 14 and 22 mm in men and between 12 and 19 mm in women.
CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive moderate strength correlation between the tibial insertion site and the patient’s height and weight. There was also a positive correlation between the femoral insertion site length and the patient’s height and weight, but with strength classified as weak.
