BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the association between para-umbilical hernia (PUH) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
METHODS: Total of 802 CT-angiograms were reviewed. They were subdivided into two groups. Group A (137) CT-angiograms were for patients with AAAs, who were eligible for endo-vascular aortic repair in multi-institutions in Jordan from the period of December 2014 to January 2016. Group B (665) CT-angiograms were for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) without AAAs from the period between 2010 and 2015 at King Abdullah University Hospital. Each CT-Angiogram was reviewed looking for PUHs.
RESULTS: In patients with AAA (group A), forty patients (19.70%) had PUHs compared to six (0.90%) patients with PAD without AAAs (group B).
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with AAAs had 21.9 fold increased risk of having PUHs as compared to patients with PAD. A strong association presents between PUH and AAA. Elderly patients with PUH may require a more intensive evaluation for the presence of AAAs.
