BACKGROUND: Cyclical mastalgia is a common symptom experienced by women of reproductive age; many etiopathogenetic hypothesis have been formulated, and many treatments have been proposed. We tested an anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous dietary supplement, to treat patients with moderate and severe cyclical mastalgia.
METHODS: From June, 2014 to April, 2015, a dietary supplement with anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous properties (Deflogo SD®) was administered to 50 women, 32 with moderate cyclical mastalgia, aged 20-52 (mean age 37), and 18 with severe cyclical mastalgia, aged 28-53 (mean age 42). The study was conducted at the Breast Center of “Delegazione dell’Alto Lario”, of the Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori (LILT) of Gravedona (Italy). The weight, height, bra-size, clinical history (number of pregnancies, extent of breast-feeding, usage of oral contraceptives), personal habits (consumption of coffee, physical activity), and breast density of the patients were recorded.
RESULTS: Twelve women dropped out; 38 of 50 patients were evaluated, 26 with moderate and 12 with severe breast pain. The overall response (gathering the cases of reduction with the ones of pain resolution) has been 92.1 %. Women with moderate cyclic breast pain have generally responded better than women with intense cyclic breast pain (96.1% vs.83.3%). Mild collateral effects were observed in 8% of women.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that the dietary supplement (Deflogo SD®) is effective and safe to treat patients with moderate or intense cyclical mastalgia.
