Alternatively surgical management of scimitar syndrome in an adult without atrial septal defect

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China
We introduce here an alternative surgical correction of scimitar Syndrome with no atrial septal defect (ASD) on a 25-year-old male patient. The chest radiograph presented typical scimitar signs in the lower lobe of the right lung. Two-dimensional echocardiography detected no atrial septal defect. Cardiac catheterization showed that the right pulmonary vein anomalously drained to inferior vena cava (IVC). We chose an alternative approach to treat this patient. A baffle was sutured on the part of IVC and right atrium to ensure free drainage of the right pulmonary vein. The patient demonstrated complete correction of the Scimitar syndrome in UCG examination in the 6-month post operation follow-up visit.
