Aim. Horizontal sliding osteotomy of the mandibular symphysis with advancement of the mobilized segment is the technique of choice for correction of anterior-posterior deficiency, achieving harmony of the lower face with stable and predictable results. This article discuss about surgical techinique, side effects and long-term follow-up in chin surgery performed with the sliding genioplasty technique
Methods. This study was conducted as a clinical prospective study. Sixhundredeightythree patients, 398 females and 285 males, age ranged between 18-47 years old, were recruited consecutively between January 1998 and January 2003 for chin surgery. In the sample were considered only the patients where was performed a sliding osteotomy genioplasty.
Results. The final sample was of 212 patients, 168 females and 44 males, age ranged between 19-38 years old. In the final sample 24 patients underwent surgery for prophiloplasty (rhinoplasty and genioplasty), 36 only for genioplasty and 152 for bimaxillary surgery and genioplasty. Surgical outcomes were evaluated by analysis of pre- and post-operative photographs, analysis of pre- and post-operative measurements.
Conclusion. Horizontal sliding genioplasty is a reasonable option to improve the lower third facial profile, with a low range of side effects, but should be considered only when the surgeon is well trained in bone surgery and when the skeletal deformity merits its use.
