BACKGROUND: A foreign body in an organ is any object that originates from outside or within the corpus, which should not be present in that organ. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of patients with nasal foreign bodies in the emergency department of Dr. M. Djamil Padang Central Public Hospital in 4 years (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020).
METHODS: This study was retrospective descriptive, with cross-sectional and total sampling methods using secondary data on nasal foreign body patients who meet the inclusion criteria in the Dr. M. Djamil Padang Central Public Hospital during the 2017-2020 period.
RESULTS: Up to 728 patients with nasal foreign bodies met the inclusion criteria, dominated by males (63.2%), and the age range of total patients was 0-10 years (716 patients or 98.4% of 728 patients). According to its types, the most common foreign body was an inorganic object with 555 cases (76.2%) and repeatedly found in nasal dextra (54%). Congestion was the most prevalent symptom found in 674 cases (92.6%). Most patients went to the hospital for treatment within 24 h (92%) after the case, and nasal foreign body extraction management was highly done without general anesthesia (97.3%).
CONCLUSIONS: Nasal foreign body mainly occurs in male pediatrics (0-10 years), and the extraction was mainly done without general anesthesia.
