The Bonebridge bone conduction hearing implant: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this paper were to assess the current status of the literature on safety, efficacy and subjective benefit after Bonebridge implantation.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review was performed by an electronic database search including PubMed and a manual search of relevant journals and reference lists of included studies. Randomized controlled trials, clinical controlled trials and cohort studies and case series investigating Bonebridge implant outcomes were included and retrieved literature was screened and extracted by two reviewers independently. Case reports were excluded. Subgroup analysis was performed on the basis of indication groups for the Bonebridge implant (conductive and/or mixed hearing loss, single sided deafness) and participant ages (children vs. adults). This systematic review comprises of 28 citations reporting on pre- and postoperative audiological results, speech performance in quiet and in noise, localization testing’s as well as subjective outcomes.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: All reported and here summarized outcomes reflect the excellent audiological performance and high patient satisfaction, accompanied with a low complications rate and an incidence rate of 144.5 person-years for the indications of conductive and mixed hearing loss as well as in individuals suffering from single sided deafness throughout all age groups of subjects who underwent Bonebridge implantation.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the audiological outcomes, the high patient satisfaction as well as the low complication rate the authors recommend the Bonebridge as first line treatment for patients suffering from hearing loss within the devices’ indication criteria (conductive and/or mixed hearing loss, single sided deafness).
