BACKGROUND: This study was performed to determine the relationship between types of (nasal septum deviation) NSD and (mucociliary transport time) MCTT using the saccharin test in ENT-HNS outpatients at M. Djamil Hospital in Padang.
METHODS: Sixty patients who attended the ENT-HNS as outpatients with or without nasal symptoms from October 2012 to February 2013 were included in the study. The saccharin test was performed on both sides of the nose. This cross-sectional study was analyzed by post-hoc Bonferroni test. Nasal type was determinate by nasoendoscopy, grouped according to the Mladina and Subaric-Mladina classifications.
RESULTS: Type 7 nasal septum deviation was present in 26.7% of patients. MCT time was 11.93±3.65 minutes in the anterior type, and 15.64±4.59 minutes in the posterior type.
CONCLUSIONS: Mladina type 7, 3 and 4 were the most frequent types of deviation. The posterior type according to Subaric-Mladina and type 5 according to Mladina had the longest MCT time.
KEY WORDS: Nasal septum - Mucociliary clearance - Saccharin
